“Discontent is the first necessity of progress.”
-Thomas A. Edison
I’m a 20-something, “sane in a crazy world” (thank you Shane Claiborne), seeking to start or be part of a community in the Tampa area, sick of sticking Christianity into the mold the world makes for it. I look around, and I’m not content with how we humans treat our bodies, each other and the planet. I look around, and I think out loud, “This isn’t how it was supposed to be.”
I’m on the verge of something radical, maybe even ridiculous, because anything else sort of seems pretty pointless. Every Sunday at Mass, we pray, “Thy kingdom come,” but we adapt during every other day to a culture that isn’t conducive to the kingdom’s arrival. And who can blame us, really? We grew up in a world where discomfort and discontentment are to be avoided. It’s our culture.
But it’s not His culture. And the longer I choose mine over His, the longer I’ll wait to see His kingdom come. We are His hands and His feet. What should we do if we don’t see His kingdom?
Bring it.
